Are you a brave explorer? It's time to find out.

How to Prepare for a Hike

Cooke City is a remote area. If something were to happen when you were on the trail, it might take a while before someone found out. This isn't meant to keep you from hiking the mountains, but to warn you about the dangers of being ill-prepared.

In the summer, you're going to want to bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen, good hiking boots, and plenty of water. Older explorers may want to bring a walking stick to help support them on some of the more difficult treks. You should expect some shade from the trees, but aside from that you should bring some method of cooling off.

In the winter, you should bring plenty of warm clothes, heat packets, and snowshoes. Breathable materials are incredibly important, as getting too warm can cause you to sweat, which can be bad news in the wilds of Wyoming and Montana. Don't forget the importance of drinking water, even in the cold!

Some items are smart to bring no matter the season. For example, you should always carry a knife with you. A basic first aid kit (as well as first aid knowledge) can go a long way. Firestarters can be important in dire circumstances. Hopefully you won't have to use this stuff, but it can go a long way.
